
And if you're a Diet Coke purist, don't panic: The classic flavor and packaging will still be available as well. Now, in an attempt to spike sales (Beverage Digest reported Diet Coke sales dropped nearly 2 percent in 2016 alone), the brand is announcing major changes. While the new cans will also be slimmer, they will still hold the same 12-ounces as the original ones. Each can has a vertical stripe of color - tailored to each flavor [ginger lime/green; twisted mango/yellow; feisty cherry/purple; zesty blood orange].
The new flavors, which use aspartame and acesulfame potassium as sweeteners, target millennials, an age demographic that the company says has "an affinity for bold, yet refreshing and great-tasting, flavors in their favorite foods and beverages - from hoppy craft beers to spicy sauces". In addition to revamping its image, Coca-Cola also has announced it will be launching four new flavors of Diet Coke.
"But where others companies are responding to changing public tastes and to the public health crisis and the cost this puts on the NHS, Coke is tinkering around the edges". A slightly refined typography aims to simultaneously preserve Diet Coke's heritage, yet present it in a more progressive manner. "We're making the brand more relatable and more authentic". Rival PepsiCo is wrestling with an arrest in sales of its diet colas, and last quarter Coke itself reported a "mid single-digit decline" in North America for the Diet Coke brand.
Sales of diet colas fell 3.5% past year; Acevedo said Diet Coke declined about that much as well.
