Detour for astronaut set to be first African-American on ISS

The reasons for the removal of this particular U.S. astronaut are unclear, as Jeanette Epps certainly seems to be qualified in all senses of the word.

In an interview with Elle magazine previous year, Dr Epps said: "I get very excited when I think about being up in space, partly because I compare it to going into a war zone". The removal is also significant, as Epps was to be the first African-American US astronaut assigned to the space station team.

Epps, who would have been the first African-American crew member on board the ISS, was pulled from her mission for unspecified reasons.

For example, a shutdown will not leave the three NASA astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) high and dry. She has a doctorate in aerospace engineering and has been through extensive science and technical training in preparation for an eventual space station mission. "Jeanette knows that little girls, including her nieces, ages 5 and 6, are watching".

Brandi Dean, a NASA spokesperson told collectSPACE that a number of factors were considered. "'I want them to see me and think, Oh, that's just what women do'". In an announcement, they said she would "come back to Nasa's Johnson Space Center in Houston to expect obligations in the Astronaut Office".

NASA announced that Epps will be replaced by her backup, Serena Aunon-Chancellor.

The space agency said she would 'be considered for assignment to future missions'. She graduated from Corcoran in 1988 and went on to 11 1/2 more years of schooling, beginning at Le Moyne College.

She received her PhD in aerospace engineering at the University of Maryland in 2000, and worked in the Central Intelligence Agency for seven years prior to joining NASA, according to her official biography.

The flight crew plans to spend at least six months at the International Space Station.
