Creator of the 'Media Men' list of accused sexual harassers outs herself

On Tuesday, N+1 editor Dayna Tortorici tweeted that a magazine writer was about to reveal who'd begun the list-a shared Google Doc of reputedly predatory, or at least creepy, male writers and editors, most of whom are based in NY, and several of whom have been fired since their names appeared on the unpublished and unvetted and unsigned, but very powerful, list.

It's unclear which job Donegan was referring to in the article. Women have always been doing this informally, as Donegan notes - the list was a more formal version of a whisper network, one women could use to help protect others since official channels like human resources departments or police reports so often result in dead ends.

The spreadsheet was live for less than a day before it was taken offline, and reportedly had 70 names on it.

Donegan said that after the document was exposed, she lost her friends and her job. "The women who used the spreadsheet, and who spread it to others, used this power in a special way, and I'm thankful to all of them", she wrote.

Once the list was spread, Donegan said it elicited a slew of think pieces, some of which condemned it as "reckless, malicious or puritanically anti-sex", not to mention irresponsible (due to its anonymous nature) and verging on vigilantism, or, at worst, catty in the manner of the Mean Girls "Burn Book". Naming names, allegations on the list went from "inappropriate communication" to rape.

It is likely that the Harper's article, which had yet to reach its final version Wednesday, will be revised to reflect Donegan's revealing herself as the person who created what became an important document at a time when powerful men in the media and other fields have been called out and punished not only for instances of alleged rape and sexual assault but also for modes of behaviour that seemed acceptable in workplaces just a decade ago.

Donegan is a former editor at the New Republic who also worked at the magazine n+1.

And yet, after all this, "We don't know what actually happened", Al Tompkins, a media analyst at Poynter, reminded me.

"In contrast, the value of the spreadsheet was that it had no enforcement mechanisms: Without legal authority or professional power, it offered an impartial, rather than adversarial, tool to those who used it", she wrote.

The document also had a huge impact on her own life, Donegan wrote.

Using a strategy from the film Spartacus, several prominent women have claimed authorship, hoping to protect the creator's identity for fear that she would be in danger.

Given the speed of media in the age of social platforms, the subject of the article she has been working on for Harper's underwent a substantive change just hours after she spoke those words.

After the anonymous "Shitty Media Men" list, a Google spreadsheet where women anonymously reported harassment encounters in media, went viral after being posted on Reddit, rumors began swirling that Harper's Magazine would reveal the identity of its author in its March issue. "Here if you need anything at all", Chrissa Hardy, an editor for Wise Bread, responded to her story. Passed around among social networks in a white-dominated media landscape, the list was not shared with many women of color. But for those who could access it, the list was supposed to prevent harassment and abuse.

Having helmed 2008's Punisher: War Zone produced by Gale Anne Hurd and starring Ray Stevenson and receiving an Oscar nomination in 2003 for her short film Johnny Flynton, Alexander been mainly directing TV the past few years.

In her exposé, Donegan said she made a decision to out herself before someone else did it for her. "All of this was terrifying". Certainly, the women who contributed to the spreadsheet might be very interested to know if their honest desire to warn other women had been hijacked to very different ends. "I still don't know what kind of future awaits me now that I've stopped hiding", she added.

"The experience of making the spreadsheet has shown me that it is still explosive, radical and productively risky for women to say what we mean".

"Fundamentally, a whisper network consists of private conversations, and the document that I created was meant to be private as well".

Because the spreadsheet was sourced anonymously, she says she added a disclaimer: "This document is only a collection of misconduct allegations and rumors".
