China will not attend Foreign Ministers int'l meeting in Canada

"The meeting will bring together nations from across the globe to demonstrate worldwide solidarity against North Korea's unsafe and illegal nuclear and ballistic missile programs", the department said in a statement Thursday.

Imports from North Korea slumped 81.6 percent year-on-year to $54.34 million, Chinese customs spokesman Huang Songping said in a briefing in Beijing on Friday.

U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson will travel to Canada next week to co-host an worldwide foreign ministerial meeting on addressing North Korea's nuclear and ballistic missile programs, his spokeswoman said Thursday.

Overall trade between the two countries fell 10.5% to about $5B, and the month of December showed trade diving 50.6% compared to 2016.

U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis will participate in the meeting's welcome dinner on Monday, the State Department said. "They are doing a better job of implementing the U.N. Security Council resolutions".

After North Korea tested its most powerful nuclear device yet and launched missiles capable of reaching the U.S., the U.N. Security Council imposed a series of sanctions restricting oil imports and cutting off about 90 percent of its export revenue.

A Japanese foreign ministry official, meanwhile, was quoted by Bloomberg News on Wednesday raising questions about the involvement of countries such as Colombia and Greece, which are peripheral to the North Korea crisis.

North Korea's first talks with South Korea in more than two years turned tense Tuesday, after representatives of President Moon Jae-in proposed discussions with Kim about giving up his nuclear weapons program.

The meeting is ostensibly created to show worldwide solidarity in the face of the North Korean threat, discuss ways to strengthen sanctions against the country and seek diplomatic solutions to the crisis.

North Koreans are also genuinely anxious the United States could launch a preventive war on the peninsula.

He also said that China would continue to make its own efforts to push the peninsula nuclear issue back to the track of dialogue and consultation as well as settlement.

Tensions have receded dramatically on the peninsula since North and South have held high-level talks at Panmunjom, and North Korea agreed to send its athletes to the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics.
