Chemists running out of flu jabs as demand threatens new NHS crisis

According to the CDC, there were 22.7 hospitalizations per 100,000 people in the USA last week - up from 13.7 the previous week.

- A spike in flu cases in NY and across the country has health officials urging people to get influenza vaccine if they haven't done so already.

On Long Island and beyond, the annual menace is on the move spread in droplets launched through coughing, sneezing and even conversations held at close range. During the week that ended December 31, there were 2,887 laboratory-confirmed cases. Allen's office still has some vaccines available. Thousands of additional cases are expected in the coming weeks, experts are predicting. "There's a sense across the country that a lot is happening with flu".

Department statistics also show that over the last week there has been a 78% increase in people visiting the doctor with flu-like symptoms; a 50% increase in people taken into hospital with the flu and a 65% increase in intensive care flu admissions, compared to the previous week.

H3N2, which is the dominant flu in both Canada and the USA, is prone to mutation, which can make the vaccine against it less effective - even though it appears the virus strain was correctly predicted.

If someone in the high-risk group gets the flu they should contact their GP and get an anti-viral drug within 48 hours.

Last year, for instance, there were 467 cases in ME through the end of January, but 5,830 cases by the end of the season. There have been 54 reported flu deaths in Canada, five of which were children.

The majority of cases continue to be the H3N2 subtype of Influenza A, a particularly brutal strain that tends to cause more severe illness, particularly among the elderly and children.

"Ninety percent of it is H3N2", Fries said of the dominant A strain of the flu.

It takes most people a week or so to recover from normal flu so if your symptoms are worse or running over that time, it could be a sign of a worse strain.

In Maine, the number of hospitalizations increased by 53 last week, with 10 new outbreaks, according to a January 9 update from the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

"We will see other flu viruses start to circulate later during the flu season and most flu vaccines protect against all four of those circulating viruses". A third, known as the B strain has been occurring in very low numbers, he said.

Several years ago, the swine flu epidemic featured an H1N1 rendition of the much-hated flu virus. N allows the pathogens to break free from infected cells and move into unaffected cells during the infection cycle.

The administration and staff at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital in Huntingdon is asking the community to restrict visitation to the Hospital, due to the number of people with influenza and the contagious nature of the flu. "I was really weak", said Margaret Shafer, who went to a Seattle emergency room this week after a bout with the flu was followed by pneumonia.

Earlier this week, Crain's reported MI is facing widespread levels of patients with flu symptoms.

The CDC's monthly lecture series gained media attention this week with the announcement that their January 16 meeting would focus on the "Public Health Response to a Nuclear Detonation", interpreted as the health body responding to heightened rhetoric of nuclear war between the USA and North Korea.
