Cam Newton tries to take blame after valiant effort

Alex Smith may be playing for a job, either with the Chiefs or another team. You still have to have a level of patience to take advantage of them when they do come around.

Can the Falcons contain running back Todd Gurley, a bona fide MVP candidate? Your team is almost blowing a huge lead at home after a fantastic regular season. This is the best Saints team I've ever seen even better than the Super Bowl team in my opinion. This time, they're riding a defense that has been improving, giving up only 93.6 yards per game on the ground over the last eight games. Yet, with the talent on the Chiefs, it was easy to rule Kelce out for the game. When it comes to the playoffs, the Chiefs have been underachievers and this game will be Alex Smith's last with the team, which drafted Patrick Mahomes last spring.

We know this much: the New Orleans Saints are moving on. There's only one on this team.

After an incompletion in the end zone on third down, Vonn Bell sacked Newton on a safety blitz, ensuring the Saints (12-5) swept all three meetings with Carolina (11-6) this season, in addition to winning their first play-off game in four seasons. Beaten soundly by the Saints twice before this season, they pushed New Orleans to the brink in the third matchup.

The Panthers lost 31-26 in the Wild-Card game against the Saints.

Now, the National Football League have asked the Panthers to explain their handling of Newton's injury - adding that it has gotten in touch with the team's medical staff. Lattimore recorded five regular season interceptions in his 13 games. Brees is still athletic as ever and if I was his agent when I was negotiating with Saints GM Mickey Loomis I'd just play that play on a loop for 10 minutes and say, "Drew wants his money". The Saints needed every single one of his 376 yards passing to keep this magical season alive.

Jordan saved some of his jokes for Carolina tackle Matt Kalil, who has given up two sacks to Jordan this season.

"We trust our system", Brees said Sunday night at the Superdome.

"I didn't need somebody to tell me to go run the bleachers at my high school by myself". Does it change my mind-set going into the game? No. You may not talk to them for a long time. "If you're rushing five, six, seven yards a carry, it becomes easier. Their chunk yardage was tremendous". I still think positive plays.

We'll worry about that later this week, but for now let's bask in having Drew Brees quarterback our favorite team, and that we get at least one more week to enjoy this fantastic unexpected ride that is the 2017 Saints.

Trouble in Pats-land: Is a bad breakup looming for Robert Kraft, Bill Belichick and Tom Brady? Rivera said during his postgame news conference that Newton was told to sit down near the sideline to give Anderson an opportunity to warm up before going into the game.

A Chucky sequel: A $100-million contract "basically" is in place for Jon Gruden to coach the Raiders again.

But taking away the Saints' bread-and-butter offensive phase left the game in the hands of a guy who at the age of 38 years old still wields a carving knife in the pocket.
