Worshippers will walk through the streets - oftentimes barefoot - while following the statue's route for up to 22 hours.

Nineteen million people are expected to celebrate the Feast of the Black Nazarene in Manila next week.

THE Philippine Red Cross (PRC) has attended to 465 devotees who were in need of immediate medical attention amid the annual Black Nazarene procession in Manila Tuesday, January 9.

Officers of the Manila Police District announced last month that the 10-day series of activities that began on December 31 has an estimated participants of 18.9 million.

"The procession will not pass through Lagusnilad overpass to ensure the safety of the devotees", Coronel said.

The official also said that Estrada suspended work at the city hall except the department directly involved in the event.

Brig. Gen. Alan Arrojado, newly designated commander of the Armed Forces of the Philippines-Joint Task Force National Capital Region, said he would deploy a battalion of soldiers to assist police in securing the procession.

Estrada cited that millions of people are expected to join the celebration of the Black Nazarene procession or the annual traslacion.

"Filipinos who come to Quiapo... get a sense of being near the Lord, of the Lord touching them and of the Lord accompanying them... through hard challenges", Quiapo church parochial vicar Father Marvin Cruz told AFP.

In a frenzied display of religious fervor, men, women and children climbed over heads and shoulders and flung themselves at the centuries-old Black Nazarene that they say performs miracles.

Others said they joined the procession or paid homage while waiting for the arrival of the image at the Quiapo church to thank the Black Nazarene for all the blessings granted them.

Msgr. Hernando Coronel of the Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene discusses the route of the Traslacion at a news briefing.

"We hope that the procession would be shorter this year". It will cover a 500-metre radius from the procession route, the Quirino Grandstand and Quiapo Church.
