Bangladeshi man indicted for New York bomb attack

"In selecting this time and place, Ullah's alleged objective in the Port Authority bombing was painfully clear: to inflict as much damage as possible, and to strike fear into the hearts of New Yorkers in the name of ISIS".

Ullah, 27, is accused of carrying out the December 11 attack in a busy passageway near Port Authority Bus Terminal in midtown Manhattan.

When asked by a judge if he had a plea, he responded saying not guilty.

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio called the explosion "an attempted terrorist attack".

Wednesday, a federal grand jury returned a six-count indictment against Ullah that includes use of a weapon of mass destruction, providing material support to Islamic State and bombing a place of public use. The pipe bomb did not fully explode.

He said other evidence includes Ullah's post-arrest statements, Federal Bureau of Investigation laboratory reports on fingerprints and other forensic evidence along with materials gathered during searches of locations where Ullah stored his laptop and other personal items. A police search at Ullah's home found the passage, "O AMERICA, DIE IN YOUR RAGE", written in his passport.

His court-appointed attorney, Amy Gallicchio, did not elaborate on the plea outside court.

"When we have an indictment containing charges like this, I think it's easy to lose sight of the important and invaluable rights that every person is afforded in our system of justice, including Mr. Ullah", Gallicchio said.

A Bangladeshi immigrant was indicted Wednesday in the failed pipe bombing of the NY subway system last month.

In December, Ullah appeared in court via video from his hospital bed at Bellevue Hospital. Only he was seriously injured.

U.S. District Judge Richard Sullivan has given the parties three months to share evidence before the next hearing on April 13. President Donald Trump and GOP leadership have publicly opposed this policy and have said the practice should be halted as part of any comprehensive immigration reform.

Meanwhile, Ullah will seek medical attention inside Manhattan's Metropolitan Correctional, where attorneys say that he needs treatment to remove his stitches and replace his dressing.
