African countries demand retraction, apology for Trump's comments

Demeaning words attributed to President Donald Trump about Haiti, El Salvador and impoverished African nations drew condemnation Friday, as immigrants, advocates and politicians said they reflected a view contrary to the American spirit.

Others who attended the meeting have said that Trump questioned why the US would accept immigrants from "shithole countries" like Haiti or those in Africa instead of places like Norway, whose prime minister he had met the day before.

The compromise reached by Mr. Durbin and others incorporates a modified version of the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act, the measure that gave undocumented immigrants brought to the United States as children their "Dreamer" label.

Maryland state Sen. Delores Kelley, a Democrat whose daughter in law was born in Haiti, also rose to address the president's comments.

"Never said anything derogatory about Haitians other than Haiti is, obviously, a very poor and troubled country".

Initially, the White House did not deny Trump's racially charged comments, but Trump claimed today he did not utter such disparaging words during a recent meeting at the Oval Office.

James Hunder, the president of the Liberian Organization of the Piedmont, said he was surprised that Trump made the vulgar remark. The president said he has a wonderful relationship with Haitians and suggested future meetings probably should be recorded.

Trump also took issue with the idea that, while a lottery that benefits people from Africa and other nations would be ended, there could be another way for them to apply.

But Democratic Senator Dick Durbin who was present at the meeting publicly pushed back, saying Trump had repeatedly used "vile and racist" language.

According to three people briefed about the meeting, it featured a dramatic moment between the president and Graham, who referred to Trump during the 2016 presidential campaign as a "race-baiting, xenophobic, religious bigot", but who recently has grown close to the president and has advised him on immigration policy.

In 2016, in response to a question about then-candidate Trump's views on immigration and his intention to build a wall along the U.S. border with Mexico, Francis said a man with such views was "not Christian".

He said it was a necessary change, even though the U.S. had been linked to Grosvenor Square for more than 200 years.

The Vatican newspaper on Friday branded US President Donald Trump's reported comments about African countries and Haiti as "particularly harsh and offensive".

After an emergency session to weigh Trump's remarks, the African Group of United Nations ambassadors said it was "concerned at the continuing and growing trend from the USA administration toward Africa and people of African descent to denigrate the continent and people of color". "I don't think you could expect to see anything else, unless it's something that makes him look good", Reuters reported him as saying.

At an event in Wisconsin on Friday, House Speaker Paul Ryan described Trump's comments as "very unfortunate" and "unhelpful". Never said 'take them out.' Made up by Dems.

Labossiere was among Haitians and Africans in the Bay Area and around the world who swiftly called Trump out for his comments, calling them blatantly racist.
