5-year-old who survived Texas church shooting leaving hospital

After spending months in the hospital recovering from a gunshot wound, five year-old Ryland Ward left The University Health System Hospital in a fire truck.

Duncan was the one who found the boy and brought him out of the defiled church that day.

Ryland was rushed to the hospital and soon the young boy's mother reached out to Duncan, the firefighter said.

Ryland was among the 20 people who survived the shooting attack by a gunman at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, 30 miles southeast of San Antonio. It said he will receive a Fire/EMS escort, and encouraged people in La Vernia to line up along Highway 87 around 1:30-2 p.m. with signs to show him their support.

University hospital says he is the final patient from the Sutherland Springs shooting to be released. "He wanted the siren to be louder and he wanted me to honk more", said Stockdale Assistant Fire Chief Rusty Duncan. Ward's daughters, Brooke Bryanne Ward, 5, and Emily Garcia, 7, were also killed.

"He loved every minute of the firetruck", Duncan said after dropping Ryland off at home. "I rolled her over and grabbed him and started running outside with him".

"The whole time I was with him, he was conscious and staring up at me". "And I felt a little tug on my pant leg".

Duncan said that as of this week, Ryland was walking again, with assistance.

When the boy was healthy enough to come home, Duncan gave him a ride.

Duncan told KHOU he has been overwhelmed by the response to his Facebook post about the special send-off.

Duncan said he continued to visit the little boy at the hospital, including this week.

Community members were on hand to welcome him as he passed through town.
