Tottenham can build momentum against APOEL - Mauricio Pochettino

Tottenham are certain to finish top of the group and, in that context, it felt slightly surprising to hear Mauricio Pochettino say Alli would start against Apoel.

The England midfielder travelled to Madrid for last month's 1-1 draw and trained with his teammates in the Santiago Bernabeu on the night before the match. To play in such a big game would have been nice.

However, since then Edwards has yet to receive a subsequent call-up to the first-team squad for a competitive fixture, even though there have been several opportunities when Pochettino could have used him in the League Cup or the Champions League. "Every game is an opportunity to learn and we're looking forward to Apoel". Growing up as a kid you want to play in the Champions League.

"I can't thank the manager enough for putting me back into the team in the first game I was back and I was happy to repay him with two goals".

Kane, Christian Eriksen, Eric Dier, Kieran Trippier and Hugo Lloris were all absent from training yesterday, with Pochettino confirming only those involved at Hotspur Way are in contention.

Pochettino has named two academy youngsters in his squad - the midfielder Luke Amos and the striker Kazaiah Sterling - and he is ready to give a first Champions League start to George-Kévin Nkoudou, the winger who has struggled since his transfer from Marseille in the summer of past year.

Writing in his column for BetVictor, ex-striker Owen said: "No Cypriot side has beaten English opposition in European competition and I can't see Apoel bucking that trend at Wembley".

With Tottenham having only won one of its last five games in all competitions, Pochettino said Luke Amos and Kazaiah Sterling will be among those involved against the Cypriot side, who can not qualify but are battling with Borussia Dortmund for third place.

One academy player who will not be included is 19-year-old winger Marcus Edwards, who Pochettino compared to Lionel Messi ahead of his first-team debut last season. "Tomorrow's a great opportunity for (other) players to show the fans they deserve a place in the team".

"When you're young, sometimes you need more time".

"We trust in him".
