Officials were checking on several reports of people being trapped as a result of the fire, but those have not been confirmed, Los Angeles County Fire Department Supervisor Stafford said.

"Resources are fully engaged saving lives and defending property", she said.

Mandatory evacuation orders are in place for Lopez Canyon, Kagel Canyon and Little Tujunga Canyon, Los Angeles Police Department Officer Cabrera said. "And they were like, 'Get out, get out, get out, '" Patricia Padilla told the newspaper.

A spokesman for the Wildlife Waystation said he received a voicemail from the sanctuary Thursday morning notifying him that they would begin returning some of their smaller animals, such as monkeys and birds of prey, earlier in the day.

As the fire burned on Tuesday, the Foothill (210) Freeway was closed in both directions between the Golden State (5) Freeway and the Glendale (2) Freeway, but the freeway had been reopened by Wednesday afternoon, according to the California Highway Patrol. Also, an area south of the 210 Freeway was ordered evacuated in the Shadow Hills area, in a roughly triangular area between Sunland Boulevard to the south, Wentworth Street to the north and Wheatland Avenue to the west.

Evacuation centers were opened at the Sylmar Recreation Center at 13109 Borden Ave. and at the Branford Recreation Center at 13306 Branford St.in Arleta. The fire also forced a mass evacuation of large animals, primarily horses but also others such as alpacas. Information on Los Angeles Unified School District campuses can be found here.

Twenty- one charter schools in the area also will be closed today.
