The 10 most popular cars in the United Kingdom right now

According to data published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), the number of new vehicle registrations fell 11.2% year-on-year to 163,541 last month, while business auto registrations fell by over 33%.

Sales of petrol cars grew 5% to 92,944 units, giving petrol a 56.8% market share - up from 48.1% at the same point past year.

New auto sales have plunged again, down more than 11 per cent in November. Meanwhile, demand for alternatively fuelled vehicles, which includes electric and hybrid engines, soared 33.1%.

Diesel registrations were once again hit hard with a fall of 30.6% to 61,730 units - giving them a market share of just 37.7% compared to 48.3% in November 2016 - following months of speculation over planned tax changes, as announced in the Autumn Budget. Private registrations fell by 5.1%, while fleet registrations dropped by 14.4%.

Diesel sales were hit particularly hard, falling nearly a third year-on-year, while sales of petrol cars edged up by five per cent.

'Diesel remains the right choice for many drivers, not least because of its fuel economy and lower Carbon dioxide emissions.

Britain will increase the tax paid by those driving new diesel cars that do not meet the latest emissions standards from next year, finance minister Philip Hammond said last month, in the latest blow to the segment.

"Penalising the latest, cleanest diesels is counterproductive and will have detrimental environmental and economic consequences".

Nathan Coe, Auto Trader's Chief Operating Officer, said, "2017 has been a challenging year for the new vehicle market, with Brexit continuing to cast a shadow over consumer confidence, exchange rates impacting the profitability of United Kingdom new vehicle sales and the effect of the ongoing demonisation of diesel only serving to confuse consumers and hamper production plans for manufacturers".

"Anyone holding out for a confidence boost from the Budget will have been sorely disappointed, as the Chancellor's statement only served to further exacerbate the problem".
