Southee returns for second Test against Windies

The West Indies, battling to save the first Test, were 107 for one in their second innings at tea on day three, needed a further 279 runs to make New Zealand bat again. The domination was set up by New Zealand winning the crucial toss and rolling the tourists for 134 on a green wicket before replying with 520 for nine declared as the pitch flattened out. The rest of the Windies players have all been fined 30 percent for the same as they lost the opening Test at Wellington by an innings and 67 runs.

Kraigg Brathwaite was not out 34 with Shimron Hetmyer on 27.

But just like they did in the first innings, after going from 59-0 to all out for 134, the Windies capitulated as Matt Henry (3-57), Trent Boult (2-87), Colin de Grandhomme (2-40), Neil Wagner (2-102) and Mitchell Santner (1-25) tore through the visitors easily.

Ambris poked aimlessly at the first ball after the break from de Grandhomme to give Ross Taylor a simple catch at slip and Dowrich followed in the next over also without adding to his lunch time score, caught at point off Wagner.

There were no signs of the collapse when Brathwaite and Hope were busy extending their third wicket stand to 65, as West Indies safely navigated the first half-hour.

Ferguson is expected to join the squad ahead of the second Test.

The 57-Test veteran will slot straight back into the starting XI for his replacement Matt Henry.

The second Test of the two-match series between two sides will start on Saturday at Seddon Park.
