Snow, ice and travel chaos warning after Storm Caroline

STORM CAROLINE is set to bring heavy gales, snow, and ice to Ireland in the coming hours as the extreme weather conditions make their way from the United Kingdom to Irish shores.

Snow showers could continue until Monday - with a spell of "heavy snow" possible over some central parts of the United Kingdom during Sunday.

While some may be excited by the prospect of pre-Christmas snow, Met Office meteorologist John West has warned that Caroline's winds have the potential to be "devastating".

In its amber warning, the Met Office said gusts of 70mph to 80mph were expected widely with gusts to 90mph possible in exposed areas.

The Met Office says northern and western parts of the United Kingdom are set to endure another day of "frequent blustery snow and hail showers" and a widespread frost will befall inland areas overnight as we head into the weekend.

Friday night will be very cold thanks to a northerly wind, with the mercury dropping to between -2 and -5 broadly, and down to -10 in places where snow has remained overnight.

The Met Office said snow showers were expected to become increasingly frequent over northern Scotland late on Thursday.

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for ice and snow affecting London and the south east of England.

A covering of snow can be expected in some low-level areas, especially for northern and north-western counties where several centimeters is possible.

A yellow "be aware" warning is in force for the southern half of Scotland and parts of the north of Northern Ireland between 6am and 6pm as well.

A total of 159 people were working the Ninian South platform.

The Forth Road Bridge and Tay Road Bridge are closed to double-decker buses while the Skye and Kessock bridges are closed to high-sided vehicles.

Violent Storm Caroline slammed into the United Kingdom yesterday, bringing winds up to 116mph, 33ft waves and torrential rain to large swathes of the country.

Rail services in Scotland have also been counting the cost of the storm, with a trampoline blown onto the track at Neilston causing cancellations between the village station and Glasgow Central.

Caroline is the third named storm of the 2017-18 winter season, after Aileen in September and Brian in October.
