Skirball Fire forces closure of the 405 in Los Angeles

Skirball Fire forces closure of the 405 in Los Angeles

The new fire came as part of a series of wind-driven fires that had destroyed more than 180 homes in Los Angeles and Ventura counties.

All were in stable condition, with at least two of them expected to be released from hospitals Wednesday, said Margaret Stewart of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

A SigAlert was issued for the closure of all northbound lanes on the 405 Freeway just after 5 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol's traffic incident log.

UPDATE: (7:10 a.m.) According to Los Angeles Mayor: 405 is closed in the Sepulveda Pass due to #SkirballFire east of the freeway.

This map, published by the Daily News, shows where the fire is burning right now-and how close it is to landmarks such as the Getty Center and the Skirball Cultural Center. As the fire expanded and jumped south of the Foothill Freeway, so did the mandatory evacuation area. The 405 Freeway in Bentwood has been closed as crews try to tend to the blaze.

I-405 is a heavily traveled thoroughfare by both commuters and by freight haulers along its entire length and is the busiest and most congested freeway in the United States. The winds are also helping to cause fires to exhibit extreme fire behavior, making them hard to impossible to control. "Thus far, their dedicated efforts have prevented the loss of life", said Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) on its official website. Three helicopters, 90 engines and two bulldozers were also deployed, according to the Forest Service.

Power outages were widespread. Both were closed for the day, as was Santa Monica College and all schools in the Santa Monica-Malibu school district.

"Calls are being rerouted so you will get help!" the station tweeted.
