Scrapping Pence-Abbas talks 'counterproductive': White House aide

On Wednesday, the USA president announced his decision - despite widespread opposition across the Middle East - to formally recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

According to Palestine's official Wafa news agency, the two men discussed the implications of U.S. President Donald Trump's announcement America would relocate its Israel embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Following President Trump's declaration of Jerusalem as Israel's capital, Fatah official says Mahmoud Abbas will not meet with the vice-president in his upcoming visit to the region. One person was killed in ensuing clashes with Israeli forces and at least 300 were wounded. White House Spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said at a press briefing that the United States does not know of any other countries planning to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel in the near future. He is set to travel to Israel and to the West Bank city of Bethlehem.

Ashtya declared on Friday that the Palestinian leadership will turn to global and U.S. tribunals in order to annul Trump's decision.

The official, Jibril Rajoub, said Thursday "we will not receive him in the Palestinian territories".

More than 300 Palestinians have reportedly been injured in clashes with Israeli police forces, which were deployed throughout the occupied territories following Trump's announcement that he would both recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital and begin the process of moving the USA embassy there.

Meanwhile, the Marxist-Leninist Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) cancelled its 50th anniversary commemorations to protest against the Jerusalem embassy move on Saturday.

More than 15 injuries were reported at a hospital in the northern Gaza Strip as a result of Israeli shelling of various locations.
