Russian Federation to Allow Individual Athletes to Take Part in PyeongChang Olympics

Russia's Olympic Committee voted Tuesday to send its athletes to compete at the 2018 Winter Olympics under a neutral flag after the country was banned from competing earlier this month, ABC News reported.

"Russian sportsmen have stated their readiness to take part in the Olympic Games, despite the hard conditions and decision of the IOC, which is undoubtedly unfair in many ways", he said.

Some Russians will formally be invited by the International Olympic Committee to compete as individual athletes, though the ROC will submit rosters of its preferred teams.

"Obviously we consider this ruling unfair, but at the same time we're in the situation where we had to make a decision even though we consider this ruling unfair".

But he subsequently softened his stance the day after the International Olympic Committee decision, saying Russian Federation would not boycott the Games and would not stand in the way of athletes who hope to compete as neutral individuals.

Zhukov also emphasized that former Moscow anti-doping laboratory chief Grigory Rodchenkov, whose claims triggered sanctions against Russia, has "inflicted irreparable damage to Russian sport and the Olympic movement in general".

"Of course we should go and prove [that we won't give up]", he said to RT. "So we must go there and fight with double energy".

The six athletes are declared ineligible to be accredited in any capacity for all editions of the Games of the Olympiad and the Olympic Winter Games subsequent to the Olympic Winter Games Sochi 2014.

"I think that the decision is unfair, but we have to live with that and turn it to our advantage", he said. The announcement came days after she suggested that it was "an open question" whether the United States would send its athletes to South Korea in view of a security threat in the wake of Pyongyang's missile launches.

"It will be hard to perform under pressure, but our athletes are true fighters and I'm sure they'll cope with all the difficulties, the same way as [Russian speed skater] Denis Uskov did at the recent speed skating World Cup stage, where he earned two gold medals", Kolobkov exclusively told RT.

Russia can not tolerate and accept sanctions that Disciplinary Commission of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), chaired by Denis Oswald, imposed on the Russian participants in the Sochi Olympics, Deputy Prime Minister Vitaly Mutko told TASS.
