RSNA 2017: Smartphone addiction causes imbalance in brain chemistry

The study involved 19 young people - with an average age of 15.5 years - who have been diagnosed with internet or smartphone addiction and 19 people of the same age and gender distribution.

"There have been various examinations distributed [that link] dependence on liquor and different substances with chemical imbalances in various areas of the brain, yet this is the main study I've perused about web fixation" that shows such a connection, Wintermark revealed to Live Science.

Researchers used standardized internet and smartphone addiction tests to measure the severity of internet addiction.

According to Dr. Seo, the ratios of GABA to creatine and GABA to glutamate correspond highly to clinical scales of internet and smartphone addictions, anxiety and depression.

As a part of the study, 12 among the addicted teens were provided with nine weeks of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), a modified form of cognitive therapy for gaming addiction.

The MRS procedure was meant to measure the levels of gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA), a neurotransmitter that inhibits or slows down brain signals, and glutamate-glutamine (Glx), which causes neurons to be more electrically excited.

The South Korean docs then used MRS, a scan that measures the brain's chemicals, to see how addiction affected routines, social life, sleeping, productivity and feelings. Twelve of the group received cognitive behavioral therapy, based on a similar program created to help people addicted to video games. It determined that the ratio of GABA to Glx in addicted teens was significantly higher before therapy than those recorded in the control subjects. "The results show that adolescents who are addicted to the device have a higher rate of depression, anxiety, insomnia and impulsive violence than those who are not addicted", said Professor Hyung Suk Seo, lead author of the study, as quoted by page Daily Mail, Friday (12/1/2017).

The findings of the MRS suggested that, prior to therapy, the ratio of GABA to Glx was considerably increased in the anterior cingulate cortex of smartphone- and Internet-addicted youth, when compared with the healthy controls.

As a result, researchers believe that the chemical imbalance that they observed in the young participants could help contribute to the way people understand addictions and treatments for it.
