Pence delays Israel visit

A Pence spokeswoman said the vice president plans to leave next week instead, so he can preside over the Senate during a vote on the tax bill.

Haaretz reported that Pence's visit slated to begin on Sunday had been postponed indefinitely due to pressing tax reform issues in the United States, while the Jerusalem Post reported that he would arrive on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Vice President Mike Pence will postpone his trip to Israel and Egypt next week by a few days in case he is needed to break a tie vote in the U.S. Senate on the Republican tax cut bill, his office announced.

Palestinian officials cancelled a meeting with Pence in the West Bank days after the decision by President Donald Trump last week to move the USA embassy to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv.

The White House then warned that cancelling the meeting in the West Bank would be "counterproductive", but Abbas has been under heavy domestic pressure to shun Pence following Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital. The vice president also plans to travel to Egypt. On Friday the vice president is expected to meet with President Reuven Rivlin, and visit Yad Vashem, before flying back to Washington. Pence serves as president of the Senate.

The office of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, who blasted Trump's decision, said this week he will not meet with Pence. Pence's decision to preside over the Senate would ensure he's available to cast a tie-breaking vote if necessary.

His schedule, however, is expected to change after Palestinian leaders and Muslim and Christian clerics refused to meet with him due to Trump's announcement on Jerusalem. The Republicans are hoping that the final votes will be held next week. Republican Senator John McCain, who is fighting brain cancer, was in hospital on Wednesday.

Pence is scheduled to be in Cairo on Wednesday for a meeting with Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, a close ally of Trump's.
