Paul Scholes tells Mourinho: This is your best left back

Manchester United great Paul Scholes has suggested that Luke Shaw "does not live his life as clean as he should", but hopes to see the full-back hold down a place in the side under Jose Mourinho.

United, who beat CSKA Moscow 2-1 yesterday morning (Singapore time) to reach the Champions League knockout rounds for the first time since 2013-14, face Guardiola's Manchester City on Monday morning seeking to cut their eight-point lead in the Premier League.

"I can't think of a left-back like that who can change the pace of the game as quick as he does".

Shaw has struggled for form and fitness at United, and nearly had his career ended after suffering a horrific double-leg break in 2015.

"He was waiting for quite a long time, he was deserving [of his chance] for quite a long time", the 54-year-old stated.

Former Manchester United midfielder Scholes believes Shaw should be starting in the Red Devils team.

The 22-year-old put in the type of performance United fans had expected to see when he joined the club from Southampton for £30m in 2014. He certainly took his opportunity well and on another day he could have ended the game with a goal and assist, getting a chance himself in the 20 minute and providing both Romelu Lukaku and Marcus Rashford with chances both should have done better with.

The reasons behind his exile have been well-documented, not least by Jose Mourinho himself, who rarely misses an opportunity to criticise the England global in public.

The Argentina defender has recently returned from a long-term injury and has played in United's last three games.

Mourinho said: "Very, very positive performance, especially with the ball going forward. I think that team won't be jumping with happiness to play against us".

"I am really happy because we don't want to qualify with a defeat and we don't want to qualify with a bad performance so the objective was to qualify playing well".
