Lena Dunham, Tina Brown: We Warned Hillary Clinton's Campaign About Harvey Weinstein

It should be noted that the Clinton campaign paid no price for ignoring the warnings of Dunham and Brown.

Lena Dunham stated in a Tuesday New York Times exposé that she - a fastidious supporter of Hillary Clinton during the 2016 presidential race - explicitly warned Clinton's campaign about Harvey Weinstein being a "rapist".

The "Girls" star told the newspaper that she also warned Adrienne Elrod, a Clinton spokeswoman, about rumors surrounding Weinstein.

Schake and Elrod denied to the Times any knowledge that Dunham discussed rape.

Gwyneth Paltrow with then-First Lady Hillary Clinton at the premiere for 'Shakespeare in Love, ' the 1998 film produced by Harvey Weinstein that won Paltrow and Academy Award for best actress. And in a new New York Times investigation we're now learning the sheer extent of Weinstein's network of complicity, which included several people at a major talent agency, tabloid journalists, and some of his own employees who were powerless to speak up.

The lawsuit claims that Weinstein and the companies he worked with colluded together to hide Weinstein's widespread sexual harassment and assaults for years.

This was strongly denied by the Clinton campaign. He also was an early backer of her presidential bids.

Dunham said she had heard some of the stories others had heard about Weinstein.

There are still more revelations about Harvey Weinstein's alleged sexual misconduct and the ways the powerful producer covered his tracks. Speaking with the Times, Dunham, a vocal Clinton advocate, recalled how she felt uncomfortable with the producer's very visible support for the candidate. She was still meeting with Weinstein after her election loss planning with him a possible TV show about her campaign.

"We were shocked when we learned what he'd done", Nick Merrill, Clinton's communications director, told the Times.

She added, "I think it's a really bad idea for him to host fundraisers and be involved because it's an open secret in Hollywood that he has a problem with sexual assault". Discussions about the project continued for months, with Clinton's lawyer exchanging emails with Weinstein about potential European buyers as recently as September 28. At least 75 women have come forward in the media to detail accounts of assault, harassment and inappropriate conduct by Weinstein.

Tudor Jones, Lasry and Ziff resigned from the board of The Weinstein Company after Harvey's behavior was exposed by the New York Times a few months ago.
