Israel strikes Gaza Strip amid tensions over Jerusalem

Rockets or mortar rounds were fired Thursday afternoon at Israeli army forces.

Israel hit two "terror targets" in Gaza on Thursday after at least three rockets were fired towards Israeli territory earlier in the day, although most fell inside the Strip.

The rockets, which triggered the Code Red alert system in Ashkelon and other Israeli communities, landed in Gaza, the Israel Defense Forces spokesman said.

Rallies, demonstrations and protests dominated the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip against Trump's declaration.

Clashes were also reported throughout Judea and Samaria as Palestinians rioted following United States President Donald Trump's declaration Wednesday night that the U.S. recognizes Jerusalem as Israel's capital. The protesters burned American and Israeli flags, as well as photos of Trump.

"Hamas movement is acting in a powerful manner for the launch of a new Intifada against the Israeli occupation; we need to formulate new strategies and polices to counter the threat and conspiracy against Jerusalem, against Palestine", he said.

Both Israelis and Palestinians lay claim to Jerusalem, although Israel has retained control over the city since 1967.

While Israel has always considered Jerusalem its capital, with the prime minister's office and parliament building located there, countries have avoided recognizing it as such to prevent damaging hopes for a two-state solution.
