Hundreds of firefighters battle dynamic brush fire in Southern California

Both lanes of the 405 Freeway were closed as a result of the fire.

ABC 7 reported 350 firefighters from 52 engine companies were stationed at the scene, supported by helicopters making water drops and six fixed-wing aircrafts.

"This fire is very unsafe and spreading rapidly, but we'll continue to attack it with all we've got", Brown said, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Los Angeles Fire Dispatcher Margaret Stewart said the fire could grow with winds blowing at over 25 miles per hour.

The blaze on the east side of the freeway across from the Getty Center is causing massive traffic jams on the 405 freeway and other roadways in the area.

No evacuation orders were officially in place, however residents should be prepared to get out quickly, Stewart said. The fire jumped the 210 Freeway and burned in Shadow Hills to the south, where residents scrambled to evacuate hundreds of horses, alpacas and other animals.

Videos of that 50-acre blaze, dubbed the Skirball Fire because of its proximity to the Skirball Cultural Center, showed bright flames glowing ominously close to motorists.

By 1 p.m. the northbound lanes of the 405 had also been reopened except for two of the slow lanes near the fire scene which are closed because of the staging of firefighting equipment. The mayor declared a local state of emergency in response to the Skirball Fire, as he had done Tuesday in connection with the 11,000-acre Creek Fire near Sylmar and Lake View Terrace.

Southern California faces another day of horrifying fire and destruction as the devastating Skirball fire moves west toward Los Angeles. Along with the lack of much-needed rain, the Santa Ana winds have made it very hard to contain and put out the fires.

More than 600 firefighters battled the blaze amid strong Santa Ana winds, some gusting at 70 miles per hour.

"This has only just begun", he said Tuesday.
