Fulmer Apparently Has His Man: Tennessee Will Hire Tide's Pruitt

It looks as if new Tennessee Volunteers athletic director Phillip Fulmer is zeroing in on assistants from around the SEC to replace the recently fired Butch Jones as the Volunteers' head football coach. Tennessee struck out landing Dan Mullen, former Mississippi State and now Florida head coach, and once that deal fell through, Currie reportedly offered the Tennessee coaching job to Ohio State defensive coordinator Greg Schiano last Sunday. Piggy backing off of that report fellow ESPN reporter Mark Schlabach said the school will name pruitt their new coach on Thursday barring any unforsene setbacks.

Fulmer met earlier this week with Auburn defensive coordinator Kevin Steele and Georgia defensive coordinator Mel Tucker. That was his first job in major college football after spending the previous seven years as a high school assistant coach. During the 2014-15 season returned to the SEC as a defensive coordinator for Georgia.

Hearing that #Alabama DC Jeremy Pruitt has emerged as a strong candidate for the #Tennessee head coaching vacancy.

In his one season at Florida State, Pruitt's defense was first in the nation in scoring defense (10.7 points per game), third in the nation in total defense (248.2 yards per game), second in the nation in passing defense and lead college football with 26 interceptions.

He named his son, born in May, after former Alabama linebackers Ryan Anderson and Reuben Foster. Dooley coached with Saban at LSU and with the Miami Dolphins. Dabo Swinney also owes a lot of Clemson's achievements under his watch to having two Broyles Award-winning assistants (Brent Venables and Tony Elliott) as well as another who eventually accepted the Arkansas job (Chad Morris).

Although Pruitt isn't the home-run hire some Vols fans will have wanted, he should have Tennessee headed in the right direction in 2018.
