Firefighter killed battling powerful California wildfire

California was already hit by a huge wildfire in October, which blazed through several counties in northern California, taking the lives of 44 people, as well as devastating almost 8,900 homes and much of the renowned wine regions of Napa and Sonoma, according to Cal Fire.

The Thomas Fire is among California's worst wildfires, and the impact on Ventura County's residents has been overwhelming.

Pimlott says the firefighter was a Cal Fire engineer from a San Diego unit.

A firefighter has died while working a colossal wildfire burning in coastal mountains northwest of Los Angeles that has become the fourth largest in California history.

Thomas Norris, Assistant Chief of Salmon Creek Fire, was reached while the crew was eating lunch, tells us that the death of fellow fighter was hard. A 70-year-old Santa Paula woman's body was discovered in her auto along an evacuation route last week.

Thursday's tally of suppression costs for the so-called Thomas fire comes from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

More than 8,000 firefighters and 27 helicopters are assigned to the fire, which has destroyed more than 900 homes and other structures. That surpassed a blaze that burned inland Santa Barbara County a decade ago. By Wednesday, fire crews were able to contain the blaze, which was dubbed the fifth largest in California history, by 30 percent.

Some evacuations were lifted and the risk to the agricultural city of Fillmore was diminishing.

Smoke from the Thomas Fire towers over homes today in Ventura County.

On the western side of the fire, the coastal communities of Santa Barbara, Montecito, Summerland and Carpinteria are under threat.

The National Weather Service said extreme fire danger conditions could last through the weekend due to lack of moisture along with a likely increase in wind speeds. It has destroyed more than 900 structures, including 730 homes, as it continues to threaten about 18,000 buildings.

The National Weather Service had a Red Flag Warning in effect for much of Los Angeles and Ventura Counties through Friday morning, warning that some areas could see gusts up to 55 miles per hour. It also killed 46 race horses at a training center, and left one of their trainers with serious burns.
