Elderly couple stopped with 60 pounds of marijuana intended for Christmas gifts

In the truck were 60 pounds of marijuana with an estimated street value of more than $300,000.

The deputies noticed the odor of raw marijuana coming from the auto. Patrick Jiron, who is in his 80s, and his wife Barbara were traveling from California to Vermont, according to the York News-Times, when they were pulled over in York, Nebraska.

Lieutenant Paul Vrbka of the York County Sheriff's Department says the deputies brought in a canine unit after getting a whiff of the odour, and the dogs further confirmed the presence of cannabis.

Vrbka said the couple also told deputies that "they didn't know it was illegal to transport marijuana in Nebraska".

They told police in Nebraska, where they were detained about midway through their trip, that the approximately $336,000 worth of marijuana was intended as Christmas presents, the newspaper said.

Patrick Jiron, 80, and his wife, Barbara, 83, told deputies they were on their way to Vermont with the marijuana and meant to give it away as Christmas gifts.

The couple now face felony charges of possession of marijuana with intent to deliver, and no drug stamp.

Nebraska law requires marijuana dealers to purchase drug tax stamps from the Department of Revenue to prove that the state's drug tax has been fulfilled.

Police told the York News-Times that Mrs. Jiron was cited in the case but was not jailed "due to some medical issues". He has since been released on bond.
