Chris Froome Fails Doping Test

Four-time Tour de France victor Chris Froome has tested positive for elevated levels of Salbutamol, a medication that is used in inhalers, during Spain's La Vuelta on September 7.

The University of Kent's Dr John Dickinson - who has tested numerous British Olympians for asthma, including Team Sky riders - agrees with Professor Cooper on Froome's likely approach.

"I use an inhaler to manage my symptoms (always within the permissible limits) and I know for sure that I will be tested every day I wear the race leader's jersey".

"I have the utmost confidence that Chris followed the medical guidance in managing his asthma symptoms, staying within the permissible dose for Salbutamol".

"I take my leadership position in my sport very seriously".

Cycling's governing body said an anti-doping test that the British Team Sky rider took in Spain on September 7 showed more than the allowable level of 1 000 ng/ml of the drug Salbutamol in his body.

Sky said Froome had declared his use of the medication, adding: "The notification of the test finding does not mean that any rule has been broken".

His spectacular year is now under a cloud, however, and he and his Sky team will need to convince the UCI that there was nothing sinister about the amount of Salbutamol that showed up in his urine sample after Stage 18 on September 7.

Froome, the most dominant cyclist of the past decade and the victor of four Tours and one Vuelta, tested positive for the asthma drug salbutamol (more commonly known as albuterol) on September 7.

In the same statement, Froome said he was well aware of the rules.

The legal threshold of the medication allowed by the World anti-doping code is 1,000 nanograms per millilitre (ng/ml).

Regarded as one of the greatest cyclists of all time, Froome has been on a shortlist of favourites to win this month's BBC Sports Personality of the Year award for the first time.

"We're committed to establishing the facts and understanding exactly what happened", Sky team principal Dave Brailsford said.

Froome, who has had asthma since childhood, had an excessive amount of the asthma drug Salbutamol in his system.

In 2007, Italian sprinter Alessandro Petacchi popped a positive for albuterol and was stripped of five stage victories at the Giro d'Italia and suspended for a year. "Of course, we will do whatever we can to help address these questions".

In a statement, the UCI said Froome's B sample - athletes' anti-doping samples are split into A and B samples as a fail-safe precaution - had been analysed and it confirmed the results of the initial test.

"WADA say that an athlete can take up to eight puffs in a 12-hour period and up to 16 puffs in a 24-hour period".

The test is bound to raise new questions about British cycling following the scandal surrounding the only previous British Tour de France victor, Bradley Wiggins, over his use of so-called therapeutic use exemptions (TUEs).
