Apple rolls out fix for MacBook's security flaw

The Cupertino, Calif., tech giant said Wednesday that as of 8 a.m., the update was and that later in the day it will be automatically installed on all systems running the latest version of MacOS High Sierra. Furthermore, for those installing again after updating to macOS 10.13.1, Apple doesn't say that a reboot is required.

According to a Wired report on Friday, multiple users have confirmed that upgrading from macOS 10.13.0 High Sierra to the latest version 10.13.1, released at the end of October, disables Apple's security patch for the root user login flaw.

Recently, Mac computers were reported to be facing, what is referred to as the "root" issue bug. "I can't think of anything worse that has been shipped by a major operating system in the past decade". If you had upgraded to macOS High Sierra 10.13.1 and then installed the patch you should be fine - but not everyone has done this.

The solution is a simple one - but one that has not been made sufficient clear by Apple.

"We are working on a software update to address this issue", Apple said in a statement to news outlets.

A few days ago, it was discovered anyone could access locked settings on a Mac using the username 'root, ' which doesn't need a password and subsequently unlock the computer. To enable the Root User and set a password, please follow the instructions here: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204012.

In a Medium post today, Ergin today said his Twitter disclosure about the Mac bug was met with "many reactions like a blast".

The serious vulnerability has been identified as CVE-2017-13872, which has been fixed by Apple through Security Update 2017-001 for macOS 10.13.1 on Wednesday.

While Ergin's disclosure has received widespread attention, the bug was actually reported earlier this month in a Apple Developer Forum thread about macOS High Sierra. "Some bug in authentication is ENABLING root with no password the first time it fails!" Worse, reinstalling the security update doesn't seem to fix anything until the system is rebooted, but no such warning comes.

Apple seems to be doing badly in ensuring Macs are secure.
