Amazon Music removes ability to upload MP3s, will shutter storage service

Amazon is planning to retire its Music storage subscription service, the plan that enabled Amazon customers to upload their own music to the company's servers.

Audi driver who have purchased or stored tunes via Amazon Music can stream their library in the vehicle, sans a membership or subscription. You have until January 15 to sign up if you want this subscription.

AutoRip was first introduced by Amazon back in 2013 and it allowed users to automatically store their music CDs to the cloud with the matching MP3 files.

But the addition of Amazon's music services will likely be a welcome extra and its simple setup via compatible Audi in-car Wi-Fi can avoid the need to tether phones to infotainment units or establish Bluetooth connections. You can now and still will be able to access both those varieties of digital content on your desktop and mobile devices.

"The Amazon Music Storage subscription plans (free and paid) are being retired". Free users of the service can not upload music anymore already (the deadline was December 18, 2017); Amazon removed the ability to upload music to the company's cloud infrastructure. An official date hasn't been released, but once the storage service ends, users won't be able to play or download MP3s they previously uploaded. However, the ability to play or download their stored music will be removed in January 2019.

You can download and play the remaining 250 songs for one (1) year after your subscription expires, when the remaining 250 songs will be removed. In 2015, it shut down its music importer software and pushed its customers to start using its Amazon Music app instead. You can upgrade your Amazon Music storage plan, until that time. Amazon gives paying customers a way out this time; as long as they renew the subscription, they retain access to their music.

To be clear, the retirement plan will mostly impact the free music subscriptions, as uploading, streaming, and downloading of music files on the channel will be totally discontinued by January 2019. In recent years, Apple Music, Pandora, and Spotify have successfully redefined the listening habits of music lovers and continue to gain considerable traction against conventional models, which is where Amazon's music service is classified.
