Xiaomi announces its budget Redmi 5A starting at Rs 4999

It will be available starting December 7 at 12pm from Flipkart and Mi.com, and Mi Home Stores. The company has been pushing the device as "Desh ka smartphone" and is clearly aimed at appealing to the masses. As the name suggests, the Redmi 5A is the successor to the Redmi 4A which itself was launched in India earlier this year.

For Xiaomi, Redmi Note 4 continues to be the best-selling smartphone in India as the company shipped approximately four million units in the third quarter. In fact, for most people will find it hard to pinpoint the differences.

The Redmi 5A is still rocking an all-plastic body and there's still no fingerprint scanner on-board the device, trade-offs that seems fair considering the phone's low price tag. The older gen Redmi 4A too features the same 5-inch HD display.

Like the Redmi 4A, the Redmi 5A is powered by the quad-core Snapdragon 425 chipset. The memory can be expanded up to 128GB with microSD. The smartphone comes with a 2+1 slot, meaning that you will be able to work with two SIM cards and a microSD card simultaneously. Turn it around and you will see a slightly redesigned rear panel as opposed to that seen of the Redmi 4A - the speaker grille now shifts below the faux antenna line and so does the camera along with the LED flash. It also has a 5 megapixels front camera with f/2.0 aperture. The Redmi 4A also has a 5MP selfie camera, but the aperture size is different at f/2.2. The Redmi 4A is backed by 3,120 mAh battery which provides for a usage of a day to 14 hours. This year's model, the Xiaomi Redmi 5A comes with MIUI 8.5 on board, which means that its operating system is based on Android Nougat, not on the Marshmallow.

In terms of cost, Xiaomi Redmi 5A has been priced at Rs 5,999 and Rs 6,999. These Rs 500 crores are being given back as Rs 1,000 discount on #Redmi5A 2GB+16GB for 1st 5 Million customers. Xiaomi Redmi 5A price and availability Xiaomi Redmi 5A comes in two variants based on RAM and storage capacities. The Xiaomi Redmi 5A annihilates the competition (at least on paper) like the Samsung Galaxy J1 Ace or the Micromax Canvas Spark 4G. However, with the latest discount from the company, the new-gen Redmi 5A is definitely the cheapest Xiaomi phone ever.
