Thieves dig 25-foot tunnel into bank

Thieves dig 25-foot tunnel into bank

It is not a scene from a movie or some television series but a real-life incidence where some thieves dug a tunnel under a Navi Mumbai bank, broke into 30 lockers and stole valuables worth Rupees 5-6 crore, police said. Around a month ago, Mr. Prasad, who had rented the space from owner Sharad Kothavle, told the owner that he was going to his home town, and two employees would manage the shop in the meantime. Of 237 lockers, 30 lockers were found open.

Navi Mumbai Police Commissioner Hemant Nagrale said, "The thieves had rented out the adjoining shop since May 2017".

He added that 30 of the bank safe's 225 lockers had been broken into and the robbers escaped with the valuables who price is yet to be ascertained. Since then, they reportedly dug the tunnel which stretched to 25-feet, to reach the locker room of the Bank of Baroda branch.

Tushar Doshi, deputy commissioner of police (crime), said, "It is impossible to dig a tunnel that ends exactly under the locker room without having an idea about the bank's structure". It is required to be factored in by security agencies manning such banks, said a police officer. In the tunnel, they took support of the pillars and used plywood to ensure that it doesn't fall.

The police have formed 10 teams and have sent their officers to different places looking for the criminals.

It was reported that the robbers allegedly robbed valuables worth over Rs 40 lakh.

The bank, incidentally, had not installed CCTV cameras in the locker room to protect the customer's privacy. The bank had called all its customers to following the robbery for assessment of the robbery. "I came to keep a mangalsutra in the bank, and found that my locker was broken into".
