But now comes the test.

The Tesla battery facility can provide power to around 30,000 homes for over an hour when at full capacity, and it will be coming online within the next few days, with final testing underway to make sure the completed facility is ready to roll.

The Hornsdale farm is now the largest battery backup installation in the world at 100 megawatts, but as solar and wind energy become increasingly popular, that record is likely to be shattered soon.

It will be paired with French firm Neoen's Hornsdale wind farm, located near Jamestown, about 200 kilometres north of Adelaide.

Musk's involvement came from a now famous bet derived from light Tesla bragging and Twitter banter in March.

It's a rare day when Tesla CEO Elon Musk actually finishes a job before the deadline, but that's what happened with the massive 100-megawatt battery bank that his company built in South Australia.

When the grid connection deal was signed on Sept 29, Tesla was already half way through installing the battery packs.

Last year's state-wide blackout was blamed by opponents of renewable energy on the state's rush to embrace wind and solar, and fuelled a backlash that has split Australia's conservative federal government and led to renewed calls to support coal-fired power.

"While others are just talking, we are delivering our energy plan, making South Australia more self-sufficient, and providing back-up power and more affordable energy for South Australians this summer", Premier Jay Weatherill said in a statement.

The 100 megawattt/129 MWh system is created to reduce intermittency issues and manage increased demand during summer peak loading periods, potentially providing enough energy to power 30,000 homes for eight hours, or 60,000 homes for four hours.

"The world's largest lithium ion battery will be an important part of our energy mix, and it sends the clearest message that South Australia will be a leader renewable energy with battery storage", Weatherhill added.
