Sessions Throws Cold Water On GOP Fever To Appoint New Special Counsel

President Trump has repeatedly called on the Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation in recent weeks to investigate "crooked Hillary".

President Trump insisted the allegations levelled at the Clinton Foundation be investigated as early as last year's presidential election, and has repeatedly criticised Mr Sessions and expressed his "disappointment" in the Justice Department.

It also follows interviews in which Mr Trump said he was "very frustrated" that he couldn't get the department of Justice or FBI to investigate what he believed was wrongdoing under his predecessor.

During testimony before the House Judiciary Committee on Tuesday, Sessions told Republican Rep. Jim Jordan of OH that something that "looks like" it is worthy of the appointment of a special counsel "is not enough basis to appoint one". [John] Danforth took over that investigation as special counsel - and Mr. Mueller.

"You can be sure that they will be done without political influence and they will be done correctly and properly", he said.

Republicans have said special counsel Robert Mueller can not impartially investigate the matter because he led the Federal Bureau of Investigation at the time of the deal.

Listed among those issues was the sale of mining company Uranium One to Russian Federation and possible ties to The Clinton Foundation. Republicans have suggested that the deal, which required USA approval from a multiagency board that included Clinton's State Department, should have been blocked because of a separate corruption probe involving Russian uranium shipments.

We know the Clinton campaign, the Democratic National Committee, paid for, through the law firm, paid for the dossier [that alleges Trump-Russia ties].

Yet the attorney general also offered a mild rebuttal to suggestions by some of his fellow Republicans that there are clear connections in the uranium case that need further investigation, noting that the approval of the deal was two or three years removed from the key events in the corruption probe.

Sessions noted that there have only ever been two special counsels: one for the Waco siege in April 1993, and Robert Mueller's probe into possible collusion between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign. "And if you're now just considering it, what is it going to take to get a special counsel?"

"That's what it looks like", he added, prompting Sessions reply.

"You should never float the idea on your side, because when you float the idea, you are at least suggesting there's a possibility you may not be capable of doing the job yourself for ethical reasons", he explained.
