Minions studio reportedly creating a Mario movie

The Super Mario Brothers series has shifted over 330 million units total for Ninitendo in the years since it first landed on consoles in the 1980s, so it's no surprise that a new film is in the offing.

Mario may be headed to the big screen once again.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Nintendo is in talks with Universal and Illumination Entertainment (the shop behind the "Despicable Me" franchise) for an animated movie version of their popular video game series. However, it seems that the current plan is for Universal Animation - the studio behind Minions and Shrek - to handle the actual production of the animated movie once the final arrangements have been made.

To that end, we're willing to bet that this potential animated project will likely be much closer in spirit to the Super Mario Bros. games. Shigeru Miyamoto, creator of the legendary franchise, would board as a producer.

What do you think of this possibility? The newspaper said the deal has had its complications, centered around making the Japanese game company "feel confident it will be involved enough in the creative process". Finally, is this option a better one than trying to create a live-action film? Comment below, let us know. While there have been plenty of hit movies based on video games - just look at the Milla Jovovich Resident Evil films - they nearly always suffer from bad reviews and mixed fan response.
