Jerry Jones calls talk of him being forced to sell Cowboys 'laughable'

Six team owners have sent Jones a cease-and-desist letter warning of potential punishments for blocking the contract extension, The New York Times reported Monday, citing sources.

However, with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones doing his best to single-handedly wreck Goodell's extension as part of Jones' ongoing feud with the commissioner, things have gotten ugly in the prolonged discussions.

On Saturday, committee chairman Arthur Blank of the Atlanta Falcons removed Jones as an ad-hoc, non-voting member of the committee due to his threat to sue. If Jones can rally more support, his stance against Goodell may still take several more turns.

Jones denied that he has a replacement in mind for Goodell and added that he has never thought about replacing Goodell. "The negotiations are progressing and we will keep ownership apprised of the negotiations as they move forward".

"Roger [Goodell] has nearly 18 months left [on his contract]", Jones explained.

Belson's latest article also mentions something that PFT has consistently reported, and that others in the media have pooh-poohed: Some owners believe that Jones instigated Papa John's CEO John Schnatter to publicly disparage the league during a recent earnings conference call, blaming reduced corporate revenues on the NFL's current controversies and ratings declines.

The fight between Jones and the committee has raised the tension in other ways. If a team switches hands, most owners choose to sell by choice.

Suspending an owner for conduct detrimental to the league is an extraordinary step, but it has happened. More recently, the National Basketball Association took control of the Los Angeles Clippers from Donald Sterling, who was heard making racist remarks on an audiotape. Punishing Jones might prompt lawsuits and the prospect of an even messier and more public fight.
