I&B curtain falls on Nude, S Durga

Jury chairman, Sujoy Ghosh, has resigned while the aggrieved directors have sought an explanation from the ministry.

Top sources within the ministry spoke to India Today and highlighted that "Sexy Durga" was previously rejected for screening at the 19th Mumbai Academy of Moving Image (MAMI) festival too that took place last month. Already screened at a number of worldwide film festivals, S Durga exposes the reality of a misogynistic society and captures various encounters of a couple running away in the night. I will keep trying my luck with other film festivals.

The films in question, "Sexy Durga" and "Nude", were cleared by the festival jury led by filmmaker Sujoy Ghosh.

In the case of Ravi Jadhav's Nude that was chosen by the jury to be the opening film of the Indian Panorama section, it was denied due to incomplete post-production. My conscience won't allow me to participate in the festivities in Goa. "Each one of them has been made with a lot of love and no controversy should take away from that", Apurva said. He is getting ready to move court against Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in this regard.

Prodded to comment on the merits of the two films, he said: "They are both very accomplished films".

"Sexy Durga", which will release in theatres as "S Durga", is a Malayalam film by Sanal Kumar Sasidharan.

"There are nine Marathi films in Panorama this year".

Miffed with the ministry's interference and not being kept in the loop, a few jury members had also written to the ministry, expressing their disappointment with its move.

The jury had earlier recommended "Nude" as the opening film, with Sujoy calling it a "strong feminist film" and also lauding "S Durga" for its strong message about women's safety, reported PTI.

Reacting to the decision taken by the Government of India to ban those movies, veteran filmmaker Shyam Benegal backed Ghosh and said that the government should not support those people, who do not want the film to be shown.

I and B ministry sources tell India Today that it is the final word on IFFI screenings, since this is "restricted viewing for delegates", and not for public viewing that it can not dictate. The jury at IFFI was so qualified that I was sure that this would be the ideal platform to launch the film. "It's wonderful that our country has opened its doors, with the International Film Festival of India, providing a platform to showcase some of the finest films from across the globe".
