FBI Statistics Show Hate Crimes Rise in Minnesota in 2016

The yearly report, which comes from voluntarily reported data from law enforcement agencies across the country, found 6,121 hate crimes reported in 2016.

It was the second year in a row the number of reported hate crimes has increased, after a slight decrease from 2013 to 2014. The exact number of offenses were 381-the highest level of reported hate crimes against Muslims in the USA since 9/11.

Santa Cruz, which has a population of 65,000, ranked sixth in the state in 2016, with 12 reported hate crimes and a rate of 19 per 100,000 residents.

African-Americans were far and away the main target of hate crimes in general, targeted in 1,739 incidents, accounting for more than half of racially motivated hate crimes and about 28 percent of the total.

Most of the victims in the 2016 data, 58.9 percent, were targeted due to their race or ethnicity. The next closest category was crimes based on religion, with 21 percent, followed by sexual orientation at 17.5 percent.

Broken down by category, the Federal Bureau of Investigation reported the following motivations: 57 percent by a race, ethnicity or ancestry bias; 21 percent by a religious bias; 17 percent by a sexual orientation bias; 2 percent by gender identity; 1 percent by disability; and 0.5 percent by gender bias. Of those agencies, 1,776 reported one or more incidents.

About 3 percent resulted from anti-Asian bias, while almost four percent of victims were American Indian or Alaska Native. And of these reported offenders, 46.3 percent were white.

MA had the highest per capita rate of reported hate crimes of any state in the country a year ago, according to recently released data from the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

It was the first time since 2004 that US hate crimes rose two years in a row. HRC continues to press for improved reporting, passage of state laws that protect LGBTQ individuals from hate crimes, and expanded education and training initiatives. "They not only hurt one victim, but they also intimidate and isolate a victim's whole community and weaken the bonds of our society".

"There's a risky disconnect between the rising problem of hate crimes and the lack of credible data being reported", ADL National Director Jonathan Greenblatt said.
