Bank of England reveals deadline day for swapping old £10 notes

The old paper £10 note will no longer be legal tender from 1 March 2018, the Bank of England has announced. Now both the old paper £10 note featuring Charles Darwin and the polymer note are in circulation.

The old note - which features famous evolutionary biologist Charles Darwin, and first came into circulation in 2000 - can no longer be used in shops or other financial transactions from the end of March 1 next year.

After that date, only the new polymer £10 notes will be legal tender.

A portrait of Austen is on the back of the polymer note, accompanied by a line from her best-known work, Pride and Prejudice: "I declare after all there is no enjoyment like reading!"

A new £20 note featuring artist J.M.W Turner will follow in 2020.

The innovative polymer is more secure and durable in comparison with an old note, depicting Mr Darwin, one of the greatest personality in England's history.

Around 55 per cent of £10 notes now in circulation are the polymer version, while the remaining 359 million are paper "old style" notes.

They also have a tactile feature to help blind and partially sighted people identify them.

In August, the Bank of England confessed that it would continue with the use of tallow in future banknotes, the spokesperson noted that Bank "has not taken this decision lightly".

The new plastic notes are considered tear-proof, waterproof and expected to last around five years.
