Android Distribution chart for November shows Oreo at 0.3%

Programmer Dan Luu created a graph from the version distribution data, which appears to show a smaller fraction of Android users are benefitting from the latest version.

As mentioned, Essential said it would deliver an Oreo update back in September, with a promise that it would arrive sometime "in the next couple months".

The notable aspect of the Android Oreo is the Rescue Party feature, which helps the device to recover from constant boot loops. But the beta arrival also means the stable version should be available over-the-air before too long.

As he notes, one obvious reason for the existence of more devices running older versions of Android is that some active devices are now a decade old.

These not very encouraging numbers stem from the fact that phone makers, as has been the case over the past few years, have been taking their own sweet time in updating phones with Android's latest version.

Even forthcoming new Android handsets, like the OnePlus 5T are expected to arrive with Android Nougat rather than Oreo.

At this point, it's hard to know what Google can do about Android fragmentation, short of convincing everyone to buy Pixel or Android One devices.

Google officially launched Android 8.0 Oreo OS to its Pixel and Nexus series phones in August, and since then only one company-Sony-has released the new software to Xperia XZ Premium and now, HTC is expected to roll-out the update to its flagship phone soon. Last year's Android Nougat (7.0 and 7.1) combine for 20.6% devices.

At the moment, Android Marshmallow stands at 30.9 percent, making it the most used version of Android.

Let's hope that enough devices are updated by the end of the year to get to 10%.
