WHO's sickening honor for butcher Mugabe

The World Health Organisation (WHO) said it had withdrawn the appointment of Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe as the goodwill ambassador for non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in Africa.

A statement by the WHO chief, Tedros Ghebreyesus said he had rescinded the appointment of Mugabe after flood of outrage and concerns voiced by worldwide leaders and health experts.

And after consultations with the Zimbabwean government, he said they concluded that the rescinding decision was in the best interest of the United Nations agency.

However, UN Watch, the non-governmental human rights group, said while the ambassadorial role had been withdrawn, a "full, independent and international" inquiry into any possible deals made between the World Health Organization chief and Zimbabwe's ruler must be held.

The WHO boss had faced mounting pressure to reverse the decision, including from some of the leading voices in global public health.

This weekend, Ghebreyesus, the former Ethiopian health minister and first African to lead WHO, announced the withdrawal of the role he had conferred Mugabe.

"Reversing will actually be a strong sign that the leadership listens and is willing to be responsive to views of the global public", he added.

Dr. Tedros appointed Mr. Mugabe as a goodwill ambassador on noncommunicable diseases for Africa Oct. 18, stating he was "honored" Mr. Mugabe agreed to serve in the position, according to STAT News.

"The only person whose health 93-yo Mugabe has looked out for in his 37 year reign is his own".

Britain had said Mugabe's appointment as a goodwill ambassador was "surprising and disappointing" and that it risked overshadowing the WHO's global work.

"He (Tedros) has to remember where his funding comes from", said one health official who declined to be identified.
