USS Tucson, supersonic bomber deployed to South Korea

The submarine deployment to Korea occurred around the same time the United States deployed a B-1B bomber, with two F-15K fighter jets, to the peninsula for joint drills, South Korean news service Money Today reported Wednesday.

During the visit sailors will experience the culture and history of South Korea as well as foster outstanding relations between the US Navy, Korean military and the local Busan community.

Yonhap quoted a South Korean official who said the Tucson "had left" and that the U.S. Navy "did not disclose its next destination".

The nuclear-powered supercarrier USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) and the South's Sejong the Great-class guided-missile destroyers (KDX III) will participate in the maritime exercises, along with around 40 other vessels.

It was the second port call of the US submarine to the South Korean port city. The US Navy said in a statement that the drill is created to promote "communications, interoperability, and partnership" between the two militaries.

The Ohio-class submarine USS Michigan (SSGN-727) arrived at Busan, South Korea's southeastern port city, earlier in the day. The Navy's guided-missile submarines provide the Navy with unprecedented strike and special operation mission capabilities from a stealthy, clandestine platform.

Measuring more than 560 feet long and weighing more than 18,000 tons when submerged, MI is one of the largest submarines in the world.

The Los Angeles-class attack submarine the USS Tucson (SSN 770) pulled into the U.S. Fleet Activities Chinhae base on October 7 "as part of its deployment to the Indo-Asia-Pacific region", the U.S. Navy said on Tuesday.

The smaller USS Tucson, which is capable of firing Tomahawk cruise missiles, made a port call last Saturday at the USA base in Chinhae.

The nuclear-powered submarine is capable of carrying about 150 Tomahawk missiles, according to Yonhap.

The US President has threatened to "totally destroy" North Korea if forced to defend the US or its allies.
