USMNT World Cup Appeal Talk Surfaces After Controversial Panama Goal

Panama's first-ever qualification for the finals prompted president Juan Carlos Varela to declare a national holiday, describing it on Twitter as an "historic day for the country".

Panama came from behind to beat Costa Rica 2-1 on Tuesday and book a ticket to Russian Federation 2018, and their supporters could not believe it.

Panama evened up the scores at 1-all against their local rivals just after halftime however multiple replays seem to show the ball never crossed the line.

Panama sealed the deal with a goal in the 87 minute which saw them leapfrog the U.S. and Honduras on the CONCACAF table to qualify for the World Cup in Russian Federation next year.

One goal down against Costa Rica, underdogs Panama scored a scrappy and controversial goal to equalise and that misery was compounded by some sensational time wasting late in the game after Panama had edged ahead with minutes remaining.

The equalising goal came into the box from a corner and deflected off of Gabriel Torres' backside before hitting the inside of the far post. Four years later, he then led Ecuador to their first World Cup finals. Even with how terrible Bruce Arena's U.S. side were against Trinidad and Tobago, the worst team in the group, the USMNT would have finished third and qualified if that goal had not been given.

Round 5 - Honduras 0 Panama 1, Panama 0 Mexico 0, Trinidad & Tobago 1 Panama 0, Panama 1 US 1, Costa Rica 0 Panama 0, Panama 2 Honduras 2, Mexico 1 Panama 0, Panama 3 Trinidad & Tobago 0, United States of America 4 Panama 0, Panama 2 Costa Rica 1.

Their president, Juan Carlos Varela, got very excited after their late heroics and chose to the mark the national team's achievement by immediately arranging for a national holiday to be held today.
