'Unlikely' Gordon Hayward returns this season

Boston Celtics forward Gordon Hayward is expected to miss the remainder of the 2017-18 National Basketball Association season after he underwent surgery Wednesday night to fix a dislocated ankle and fractured left tibia.

After what was deemed as a successful surgery on Wednesday, Hayward's agent Mark Bartelstein confirmed that it's impossible for the player to come back this season.

Regardless of when Hayward returns to the court, the Celtics are expecting a full recovery.

This offseason the Celtics acquired Hayward in free agency as he was coming off of his first All-Star appearance by signing him to a four-year, $128 million contract.

"Obviously I'm not going to play tonight, but just going through shootaround today I felt really good", White said.

"But I'll be supporting you guys from here and best of luck". It's hurting me that I can't be there for the home opener; I want nothing more just to be with my teammates and walk out onto that floor tonight. It's a sad turn of events and we wish Hayward a speedy recovery. They then made a big trade to acquire Cavaliers star Kyrie Irving [VIDEO], as they overhauled their team this summer. Coach Stevens also announced Marcus Smart will be filling the job of Hayward in the Celtics' starting five.

"I think that we will probably look at the roster spot", Stevens said. "I thought the Cavs organization was top notch in taking care of him of while we were there".

The Celtics introduced Hayward as their sixth man during player introductions at the start of the game.

Hayward's injury figures to have a significant effect both on the Celtics and the Eastern Conference playoff outlook as a whole.

The 2017-18 season is very far from over for the Celtics.
