Two instructors and a customer killed in 'horrific' scene at Mission Beach

It is reported that a female diver was was tandem diving with an instructor when they crashed into a solo skydiver mid air.

Mission Beach, located between Cairns and Townsville, is a regular skydiving spot for tourists.

An unnamed eyewitness told the Cairns Post that he saw one of the skydivers falling.

"You could see one chute was tangled and it wasn't opening", said the unnamed man.

The jumpers were not immediately named, but police said the dead men were instructors at Skydive Australia.

Three people have died during a skydiving accident over Mission Beach, a popular backpacking area just south of Cairns in Australia.


In a statement issued this evening, Skydive Australia said it had suspended operations at Mission Beach following the tragedy.

Kerri Pike, the wife of former Cassowary Coast Councillor Alister Pike, was killed while taking part in a tandem skydive at Mission Beach in far north Queensland on Friday.

One of the victims landed in the front garden of a house and the two others were found entangled in a nearby tree on a banana farm.

"The Company extends its deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to the individuals and families involved and the broader skydiving community", the statement read.

"It wasn't good to watch". Police, the Australian Parachuting Federation and other investigators remain on the scene.
