Southwest Plans Hawaii Flights With Boost From Boeing's New 737

Once approved, he said, Southwest will fly most of its routes from California to Kauai, Honolulu and the island of Hawaii. "We're thrilled to bring Hawaii next year as an option to more than 115 million Customers who already fly with us, annually", said Mike Van de Ven, Chief Operating Officer.

Southwest will become the sixth United States airline serving Hawaii from the contiguous USA, FlightGlobal schedules data show. It will initially operate ETOPS-equipped Boeing 737-800s to Hawaii, before switching to the 737 Max 8 which it placed into revenue service earlier this month.

Southwest Airlines, ending years of speculation, officially announced late this afternoon that it will start selling tickets to Hawaii beginning next year and offer fares that are lower than those now in the marketplace.

The carrier intends to start ticket sales next year.

In a Wednesday statement about the new service Southwest said it was announcing its "intention to launch an application process for Federal Aviation Administration authorization".

"We anticipate fares will drop", Watterson told the Times.

As for ticket prices, Watterson said, Southwest officials have looked at how much other carriers charge for flights to Hawaii and believe the carrier can charge less. The company said it will begin the process to approve the aircraft with the FAA very soon.

You may have heard us purposefully changing our language ahead of tonight's announcement to say it's a matter of when, and not if we serve Hawaii.

The airline said more details of the new service, such as the date it would launch and the mainland cities where the flights would originate, would be released at a later date. Southwest received nine MAX 8s on October 1 and will have 14 by the end of this year.
