Royal Mail Secures Court Injunction Over Strike Action

Royal Mail Secures Court Injunction Over Strike Action

But the High Court today sided with Royal Mail's contention that the proposed industrial action was in breach of a side agreement mandating further actions must first take place.

Communication Workers' Union members were set to walk out at 11am on 19 October in a protest over pay, pensions and jobs.

The CWU said it was "extremely disappointed" at the ruling and described it as "a desperate delaying tactic from a board who are increasingly out of touch with the views of its workforce".

The mass walkout - the first planned by workers at the company since it was privatised - could now be pushed back by at least nine weeks.

'Unless the company significantly shifts its position on a range of issues and we can quickly conclude a good agreement for our members then strike action is inevitable.

Shares in Royal Mail ended up 0.5% on Thursday at 387.30 pence.

Last week, the CWU notified Royal Mail of its intention to strike for the first time since the 501-year-old firm was privatised in 2013. That means strike action in the run-up to the busy festive period now appears unlikely.

The company has written to the CWU invoking a "legally binding external mediation process", and reiterating that any industrial action would be unlawful.

More than 100 postal workers including Dave Ward, the CWU's general secretary, gathered outside the high court for the verdict.

However, Royal Mail has argued that it would be illegal for the CWU to coordinate a strike until the contractual external mediation process has been followed.

'We will now make contact with the union as a matter of urgency to begin the process of external mediation.

The CWU said its next move will be decided at a meeting later this week, but insisted the vote indicated a clear feeling among members that Royal Mail bosses should step aside because they no longer have the trust of front line staff.

"We are very committed to working closely with the CWU in order to reach agreement as a matter of priority", the firm said.
