Ronald Koeman: "I had Olivier Giroud in the building"

Ronald Koeman:

An increasingly bit-part player for Arsenal, a Giroud move to Everton would have been beneficial for both clubs and the player.

Former Everton boss Ronald Koeman has revealed how close he came to bringing Arsenal forward Olivier Giroud to Goodison Park during the summer transfer window.

Ironically Giroud was an unused substitute in Arsenal's 5-2 hammering of the Blues which spelled the end for the Dutchman's time on Merseyside.

He told Dutch football magazine Voetbal International: "That would have been flawless but he decided he'd rather live in London".

Giroud has fallen down the pecking order after the Gunners signed Alexandre Lacazette in the summer, and a result has been mainly restricted to starting in the Europa League, whilst making sub appearances domestically.

The former Netherlands global was linked with a number of strikers during the summer as he looked to replace the goals that Romelu Lukaku, who joined Manchester United, had provided.

"That was really hard to swallow".

"Lukaku was important to us, not only because of his goals, but because of his way of playing - strong, quick, direct", Koeman said. "You tell me where you can get a better striker".

Despite spending around £140m in the summer, Everton won only two of their first eight games to sit in the relegation zone. "There was always the option of the long ball to him".

"All of a sudden, we were missing such a player".

Unsworth's previous one match in charge on the final day of the 2015-16 season saw him oversee a 3-0 win over Norwich, notable for handing academy graduate and now first-team regular Tom Davies his first Premier League start and giving Jonjoe Kenny a senior debut off the bench.

Koeman added: "I was on holiday when I received the Premier League fixture list by e-mail".

However he has insisted that he has no plans to leave the Welsh outfit and said: "It would not interest me at all".

Without Lukaku, Everton have scored just seven goals in the Premier League this season - the same amount the Belgian has for his new club.
