Qualcomm to Appeal Taiwan Fair Trade Commission's Decision in Investigation

Qualcomm Inc. was fined a record $773 million by Taiwan's Fair Trade Commission in the latest blow from regulators over the way the United States company prices mobile phone chips and patents.

In a statement, Qualcomm said it intends to appeal the decision by the Taiwan Fair Trade Commission to the island nation's courts after the agency finalizes its ruling in a few weeks. According to a report by the Bloomberg news service, the fine is the largest ever imposed by the TFTC.

The FTC said that in 15 days after Qualcomm receives a formal legal document on the punishment from the commission, the firm should pay the fine if it does not appeal the decision in a court here.

The Taiwan Fair Trade Commission recently ruled in favor of the $773 million Dollars fine against Qualcomm, but the company plans on appealing the court's final word. China fined Qualcomm $975 million in 2015, while South Korea levied a fine of about $865 million previous year.

Qualcomm has attracted scrutiny from regulators around the world, with it practices probed in South Korea, China, Japan, the European Union, and elsewhere. The U.S. case is still pending. It'll now be required to end those practices and parts of unfavorable deals it forged with other companies. The TFTC also charged that Qualcomm refuses to sell chips to customers who don't agree to its stringent conditions.

During the seven-year period, the FTC said, Qualcomm collected about NT$400 billion in licensing fees in Taiwan after licensing agreements were signed, while Taiwanese buyers paid about an additional NT$30 billion to buy the US firm's baseband chips.
