Local cub master and scout father weigh in on boy scout changes

"The single-gender environment we offer at Girl Scouts creates an inclusive, safe space where girls are free to explore their potential and take the lead without the distractions or pressures that can be found in a coed environment", she said.

"We as a result of this change are very much going to be able to positively impact society going forward because of the growing role of women", said Charles Mead, spokesperson for the Capitol Area Boy Scouts of America. The larger Cub Scout packs will have the option of remaining single gender or welcoming both genders.

On the other hand Scout Master Joel Wilkins says girls have been working with the boy scouts for a while, and this just makes it official.

"I just don't believe a man can build a girl the way I can build a girl and I wouldn't be able to treat a Boy Scout the way a Boy Scout leader would be able to do so", Reed-Bradix said. Local leaders said the change was a long time coming.

"I think it basically would be the exact same, just there would be some girls involved", Damian says. "Our families in today's society are overtaxed in providing character-based activities". "Girls want STEM education, they want to pursue science and technology, engineering and math", Sowell said. "I felt like girls would eventually become a part of Boy Scouts because scouting worldwide is co-ed".

The Boy Scouts of America says "Families today are busier and more diverse than ever".

Many people in Central Florida are reacting to the decision. "Many of our Scouting families already brought along their daughters; now they can benefit as actual members".

"I don't think the girls will get the experience that they frankly deserve".

"[Families wanted something] at the same time, at the same place and not have to go to two different locations or go on two different nights of the week", he said.

In 2016, the Sequoyah Council bestowed him with the Silver Buffalo Award, the highest commendation given by the Boy Scouts of America.

One group has criticized the initiative: The Girl Scouts of the USA.

Girls will be accepted into the Cub Scouts in 2018.

"I think it's what's best for her".

Local 5 talked with some parents off camera who said that it is ridiculous that girls can join the Boy Scouts and worry that this will diminish the important role that the Girl Scouts play in young girls lives.
